PURPOSE: A device for calculating traffic information of an intelligent transport system and a method thereof are provided to set an interest area in the lane of an image to recognize a vehicle, thereby increasing the accuracy of traffic information. CONSTITUTION: An image input device(110) photographs the traffic condition of a road. An image detector(120) generates a background image based on an image inputted from the image input device. The image detector detects a lane from the background image. The image detector sets an interest area in the lane to extract a feature point of a vehicle which belongs to the interest area. A transport operating center(130) receives traffic information through a cable/wireless network.
