The composite membrane permeable to air and water vapor and impermeable to liquids, particles and solid organisms, comprises a continuous or discontinuous fiber layer (3) statistically distributed in three directions of space. The fibers (5-20 vol.%) are mechanically connected to one another to by thermal fusion adhesion to form a honeycomb structure of which one part is partially filled with a polymer (10-40 vol.%) impermeable to liquids and solid particles and permeable to air and water vapor. The fibers have a diameter of 2-10 mu m, and a length of 5-50 mm. Independent claims are included for: (1) a medical device such as a bandage to protect an area of skin; and (2) a process for manufacturing a composite membrane.
