The device has an interlocking device interlocking side walls and end walls with one another in an unfolding condition. A release device (5) releases the interlocking device. A holding unit holds the end walls supporting the interlocking device in the unfolding condition. A folding mechanism folds the unlocked end walls according to release by the holding unit toward the crate bottom. A revoking device (8) is formed downstream to the folding mechanism, and revokes the side walls of a folding crate in a direction of the crate bottom and folded according to the end walls of the folding crate. An independent claim is also included for a method for folding a folding crate.
