The embodiments of the present invention provide a method, an apparatus and a system for playing video files. The method includes the following steps: receiving a video playing request from a video terminal, wherein the video playing request carries video file identifiers and the video media capability information of the video terminal; according to the video file identifiers, determining that a decoding resource, which can decode the video files corresponding to the video file identifiers, exists, and decoding, with the use of the decoding resource, the video files corresponding to the video file identifiers into the video files in an internal format; according to the video media capability information of the video terminal, if it is determined that a first encoding resource which can encode and obtain the video files satisfying the video media capability of the video terminal, exists, encoding, with the use of the first encoding resource, the video files in the internal format into the video files satisfying the video media capability of the video terminal; if not, allocating a second encoding resource to encode the video files in the internal format into the video files satisfying the video media capability of the video terminal; and transmitting the encoded video files satisfying the video media capability of the video terminal to the video terminal.
