<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit and an image display device, corresponding to area control, having a thin shape while reducing power consumption, and having high light utilization efficiency and little brightness unevenness. <P>SOLUTION: The backlight unit, for irradiating light to a liquid crystal panel through an optical sheet, is provided with a plurality of backlight blocks each including at least two or more light sources, a light guide plate guiding incident light from the light sources to a direction of the liquid crystal panel and a reflection part reflecting light transmitted from a rear surface of the light guide plate to the light guide plate side. The backlight blocks are arrayed in a matrix shape. When a pitch of the light source is to be d, and a distance from a light emission surface of the light guide plate to an incident surface of the optical sheet is to be h, following conditions are satisfied: 0.4 mm≤h≤10 mm, 5 mm≤d≤40 mm, 0.08≤h/d≤2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
