<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plankton counting method used for counting the number of plankton which accurately determines viability of the plankton and counting the plankton alive. <P>SOLUTION: In the plankton counting method, a plankton identifying step of dividing the size of the plankton in advance to uniformize the size of the plankton is provided, and thereby, the amount of a light-emitting point and an light-emitting area after dyeing the plankton are set within a narrow range to some extent, and the irradiation time of an exciting light and the imaging time for imaging a light-emitting image are obtained in a fixed time with a stable light-emitting amount.
