<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type ferromagnetic powder for high density magnetic recording medium and the high density magnetic recording medium, which compatibly attain a high S/N ratio and an excellent weather-resistance when used for a system having a highly sensitive head such as a GMR head. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided a granular or ellipsoidal iron nitride based magnetic powder (Claim 1) which has a core part containing iron nitride having a Fe<SB POS="POST">16</SB>N<SB POS="POST">2</SB>phase as a main phase and an outer layer part containing iron oxide, and in which a thickness d of the outer layer part containing the iron oxide is 0.2 to 5 nm, the oxide is composed of at least α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3, and a ratio of α-Fe2O3/γ-Fe2O3 is 0.1 to 10%. There is also provided a magnetic recording medium (Claim 2) which has a non-magnetic support and a magnetic layer containing at least the iron nitride based magnetic powder according to Claim 1 and a binder on the non-magnetic support. The nitride based magnetic powder (Claim 1) and the magnetic recording medium (Claim 2) compatibly attain the high S/N ratio and an excellent weather-resistance even when applied for a magnetic recording/reproducing system having a highly sensitive head such as a GMR head. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
