PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery that achieves lower cost, higher safety and higher capacity as well as improves powder handling performance by improving high voltage characteristics and bulk density.

SOLUTION: A material including a compound containing an S element (hereinafter referred to as "additional element 1") in the structural formula thereof and a lithium-containing transition metal-based compound are calcined at a predetermined temperature or higher, which allows a lithium-containing transition metal-based compound showing excellent battery performance to be obtained.
