PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonylation process of an ethylenically unsaturated compound which brings about a high rate of reaction.

SOLUTION: The process for the carbonylation of an ethylenically unsaturated compound with carbon monoxide and a coreactant which is a hydroxy group containing compound is carried out in the presence of a novel catalyst comprising: a source of palladium; a bidentate diphosphine such as 1,2-P,P'-di(2-phosphor-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-cyclo-6,9,10-trioxatricyclo[3.3.1.1ä3.7}]desyl)-methylene-benzene or the like shown by Formula (I); and a source of anions.
