PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical shaft furnace in which facilities are simplified and operating conditions are not also complicated.

SOLUTION: A vertical shaft furnace 1 is a vertical shaft furnace which continuously produces a target product by burning, gasifying, carbonizing, or reducing a burden loaded from the top of the furnace. In order to form a soaking area having a predetermined length below the central position in a lengthwise direction of the furnace, high temperature gas blowing tuyeres 11 and 13 are provided in two stages in the length direction of the furnace.
