<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To issue strong alarm to strongly attract an attention when a driver unlikely performs visual observation, and also to reduce troublesomeness in the driver by issuing weak alarm when the driver likely performs the visual observation. <P>SOLUTION: A vehicle periphery monitoring device includes: imaging means mounted on a vehicle so as to image a periphery of the vehicle; means for detecting a predetermined object, based on an image acquired by the imaging; display means for displaying a display image inside the vehicle, which is generated based on the image; and alarm means for issuing the alarm to the driver concerning existence of the object which is detected based on the image. The device also includes means for determining a possibility of the visual observation indicating a degree in the driver to visually observe the detected object on an outer side of the vehicle.
