<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for an optical film which comprises a birefringence layer having a refractive index distribution of nx>nz>ny, and which has a small number of processes, reduced mixture of foreign matters and high productivity. <P>SOLUTION: A manufacturing method of an optical film having a birefringence layer comprises: a coating film forming process for directly applying a birefringent layer forming material containing at least one resin selected from the group consisting of a norbornene resin, a polycarbonate resin, a cellulose resin, a polyamide, and a polyurethane on a shrinkable film to form a coating film; a shrinking process for shrinking the coating film by a shrinkage of the shrinkable film; and a stretching process for stretching a laminate of the shrinkable film and the coating film in the direction perpendicular to the shrinkage direction of the coating film.
