The method for braiding two dough strands (5), comprises joining the dough strands for integration over a cross, where a crossing point lies over a passage (9), and providing an end portion of the dough strands, which projects away from the passage. The dough strands are alternatively lifted gradually for a respective integration step at a predetermined end portion that is moved over other dough strand so that the dough strand is moved to the other dough strand and then the end portion is moved for further integration at a predetermined position so that the braid is completely intertwined. The dough strands are joined at an angle to the passage in such a way that an empty space lies opposite to the end portion to be raised in the first integration step and the end portion of the dough strand lying below, which has not moved in the previous integration step is raised for subsequent integration step. Holders for receiving the end portions of the dough strands is present at the place where the end portions are superimposed, where the holders are molded such that the portion of dough placed into it receives its desired outer contour and/or the end portions of the dough strands are raised over the holders and moved.
