A wind turbine 10 or a radar absorbing panel 30 combined with a surface mount or a method of reducing the radar cross section RCS of a wind turbine 10 comprise a radar absorbing material RAM panel 30 mounted on the outer surface of a wind turbine tower 12. The panel 30 is attached to the wind turbine tower 12 by mounts that do not penetrate the outer surface of the tower. A plurality of the said panels 30 may be used to reduce the radar cross section of one or more wind turbine towers 12 of a wind faun. The panels 30 may be shaped to conform to the contours of a tower 12 and may be tubular. Magnetic, suction or adhesive means may be used to attach the panels 30 in a spaced manner relative to the outer surface of a tower 12. Also disclosed is a radar-absorbing panel 30 comprising a layered structure with inner and outer composite layers and including radar absorbing material RAM in the form of a functional layer and a reflector layer which are arranged in a spaced-apart manner relative to one another. The reflector layer may be a frequency selective surface FSS. A lightweight and durable RAM panel may be easily and cheaply produced and mounted to clad the outer surface of a wind turbine tower. |
