<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery having excellent charge/discharge cycle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: A secondary battery has an electrode containing silicon or silicon compound. The electrode includes: a layer of a metallic material; a layer containing silicon or silicon compound and provided over the metallic material layer; and a mixed layer of the metallic material and the silicon between the metallic material layer and the layer containing silicon or silicon compound. In the secondary battery, the metallic material has a larger affinity for oxygen in comparison to an ion which exchanges an electric charge inside the secondary battery, and the oxide of the metallic material is not insulative.
