<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording disk which has a pre-patterned surface feature and a planarized surface. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetic recording disk which has the pre-patterned surface feature of elevated lands and recessed grooves or trenches, such as a discrete track medium (DTM) or a bit pattern medium (BPM) disk, possesses the planarized surface. A multi-layer disk overcoat is used to protect the recording layer, and at least one of the overcoat layers functions as a stop layer in order to terminate a chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process to practically planarize the disk. While all of the layers of the multi-layer overcoat is located on the land, none of the overcoat layers, or a number of layers fewer than the number of the layers on the lands, is located on the recessed portions. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
