<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera improved in imaging performance. <P>SOLUTION: In this electronic camera, an image sensor 16 has an image pickup surface for capturing a subject field and repeatedly outputs raw image data. The output raw image data is amplified by an AGC circuit 20. Light exposure of the image pickup surface and the gain of the AGC circuit 20 are adjusted by a CPU 48 so as to conform to one of multiple program diagrams including specified program diagrams suitable for a landscape scene. At this point, the CPU 48 determines whether or not the average brightness of a subject field image based on the raw image data meets a first condition. The CPU 48 also determines whether or not the number of partitioned areas with brightness that departs from a predetermined range meets a second condition.
