<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for increasing an apparent storage capacity of a mobile device. <P>SOLUTION: A media control component 111 of a media data storage device monitors a media file use pattern on a local device. A media file whose use pattern is below a prescribed threshold is identified as a trim candidate. A medial control component deletes data (content) from the media file, and trims those trim candidates. When the medial file is initially opened, the data are deleted from the latter half of the medial file so that the trimmed data files can appropriately continue to render.
