PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress power consumption while continuing communication.

SOLUTION: An optical communication system connects a plurality of user-side optical line termination devices (hereinafter ONU) to a station-side optical line termination device (hereinafter OLT) using a common optical fiber. At least some of the plurality of ONUs each include a transmitter receiver which has a power-saving function of halting a transmission portion while supplying electric power to a reception portion, and a controller which transmits adaptation information on the power-saving function to the OLT through the transmitter receiver. The OLT includes a controller which generates transmission acknowledgement information on uplink communication based upon the adaptation information on the power-saving function, and a transmitter receiver which receives the adaptation information on the power-saving function and transmits the transmission acknowledgement information to the ONU.
