<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a light source device that ensures the color balance of illuminating light and the quantity of illuminating light without requiring significant alteration of a system from a light source lamp; and a projection type video display apparatus having the same. <P>SOLUTION: The light source device 10 includes: a laser light source for excitation, which is a solid light source 50; a phosphor 60 that emits light of a visible area by its being excited by a laser beam containing ultraviolet light emitted by the laser light for excitation; a reflector 56 for reflecting light emitted by the phosphor 60, thereby emitting the light in a predetermined direction; and a phosphor setting portion 62 for setting the phosphor 60 in the focusing position of the reflector 56.
