<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fiber-shaped light modulation element that enables inexpensive manufacture of a large illuminating device and a display device capable of being partially driven, and an illuminating device and a display device having the same. <P>SOLUTION: A fiber-shaped light modulation element 10A includes a linear core part 11 and a clad part 12 that covers a periphery of the core part 11. In a center part of the core part 11, a linear electrode 13 is formed. Between the core part 11 and the clad part 12, two or more electrodes 14 are formed. The core part 11 is configured to exhibit scattering property or transparency to incident light from an end face in accordance with the magnitude of an electric field. The core part 11 is composed of a bulk 11A that does not respond to the electric field and has a stripe shape structure and fine particles 11B that mainly include a liquid crystal material that responds to the electric field. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
