<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide granular material for water retention which has high water retentivity, a favorable evaporation performance of water contained within, and high cooling effect owing to the evaporation latent heat of the water, and to provide a water-retaining structure using the granular material for water retention. <P>SOLUTION: The granular material for water retention is made of a material other than sintered ceramic: wherein portions equivalent to 53-70% of the total volume of the granular material for water retention are composed of pores each with a pore diameter of 1-100 μm, and pores each with a pore diameter of 10-50 μm account for ≥60% of the volume of the pores each with the pore diameter of 1-100 μm. The granular material for water retention preferably comprises resin or a cement hardening body.
