<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a symbol reading device and a program that can promptly extract a symbol ID only by a user taking an image with a symbol positioned within a display screen of the symbol reading device. <P>SOLUTION: A user is prompted to take an image of a symbol to generate an image. The size of the symbol is detected from the generated image. Then, the detected size of the symbol is compared to a preset value to determine whether the symbol is large or small. If the size of the symbol is smaller than the preset value as a result of the determination, a focus position of imaging means is moved to a predetermined position on a remote side. If the size of the symbol is larger than the preset value, the focus position of the imaging means is moved to a predetermined position on a close side.
