The method involves inducing a fully loaded condition of the nitrogen oxide-storage catalyst (120). The wall temperature of the nitrogen oxide-storage catalyst is increased on a predetermined value. A nitrogen oxide-concentration is determined and is present downstream the nitrogen oxide-storage catalyst. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring the operating condition of a nitrogen oxide-storage catalyst.
