The method involves graphically encoding an alphanumeric string (1) in a matrix code (4), and activating a video camera (5) for detecting the matrix code. Image data received by the video camera is checked to determine whether the matrix code is detected. The image data is evaluated based on acquisition of the matrix code. An alphanumeric string is extracted from the matrix code and written into a text field (3). The video camera is deactivated after detection of the matrix code. The camera is automatically activated for user input when the user input is evaluated.
