The method involves determining (S10) temperature of a battery i.e. lithium ion battery, and discharging (S14) the battery if the temperature of the battery falls below a temperature threshold value (S12). The battery is charged if a value for charging the battery falls below a charging threshold value (S18), where the threshold value lies under 0 degree centigrade. The temperature of the battery is increased by discharging and recharging (S20) the battery. The discharging and recharging of the battery is controlled via a controller-area networkbus. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a battery of a vehicle.
