The invention relates to an apparatus (1) for strapping wound-up coils (2) using a binding tape (3), wherein the apparatus (1) has: a binding tape unrolling apparatus (4) for unwinding a binding tape coil (5), wherein the binding tape unrolling apparatus (4) has drive means (6) with which the binding tape coil (5) can be rotated in order to unwind binding tape (3), a downstream drive and tensioning unit (7), a binding head (8) for connecting two points of the binding tape (3) and a tape guide channel (9) which extends along a circumferential profile (U). In order to achieve a more simple system design without a coiler and looping pit, the invention makes provision for the binding head (8) to be arranged so as to pivot about an axis (A) such that it can assume a first position (I) in which it is in or on the circumferential profile (U) of the tape guide channel (9), and that it can assume a second position (II) in which it is situated in or on the outer circumference of the coil (3) which is to be strapped, wherein the drive means (6) of the binding tape unrolling apparatus (4) are designed to unwind binding tape (3) both from the binding tape coil (5) in the binding tape conveying direction (F) and also to unwind binding tape (3) counter to the binding tape conveying direction (F) onto the binding tape coil (5). The invention also relates to a method for operating an apparatus of this kind.
