The disclosed inverter directly detects the power output of a solar cell, finds the stabilised operating point by changing the gate pulse width regulating the on-period of the switch element of a converter, and uses the power output at the stabilised operating point to determine whether or not to start-up. Thus the stand-by time until start-up determination begins can be shortened and whether or not to start-up can be determined in a short time, with high accuracy and, even under low solar radiation, without being influenced by the amount of solar radiation.
