The retarder has an actuator (7) that is utilized for mutually rotating permanent magnets (3) against a switching element (4) in a circumferential direction. A set of rear end elements (5) is juxtaposed to the permanent magnets in one position. A set of intermediate elements (6) is juxtaposed to the permanent magnets in another position. The actuator is connected to the permanent magnets and/or the switching element via a lever mechanism (16).
