A liquid crystal display unit (100) of the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel (20) in which an optical sensor for detecting the intensity of light entered from a front side thereof is incorporated, a backlight (10) that emits light onto the liquid crystal panel (20) from a rear side, and a polarizing reflection plate (50) that is disposed between the liquid crystal panel (20) and a front side polarizing plate (40a) so as to transmit a component of light emitted from the backlight (10) and transmitted through the liquid crystal panel (20) that oscillates in a direction parallel to the transmission axis of the front side polarizing plate (40a), and to reflect a component of the light that oscillates in a direction perpendicular to the transmission axis.
