The present invention relates to a method for operating a piston engine, more preferably of a motor vehicle, with a fresh air system for feeding fresh air to cylinders of the piston engine and with an exhaust system for discharging exhaust gas from the cylinders, wherein during a gas exchange by means of a positive pressure wave on the fresh air side the charging of the respective cylinder with fresh air and/or by means of a negative pressure wave on the exhaust gas side the discharging of exhaust gas from the respective cylinder is supported. An increased variability is obtained if the respective pressure wave is generated by means of at least one electroacoustic converter.
