The present invention consists, in a general manner, in emitting over the network a frame which comprises a configuration information item relating to the behaviour of a device in relation to this network as soon as this device intervenes in respect of the exchange of an item of data over the network. When a device receives this frame, it reconfigures itself so as to operate as a router when high connectivity of the network is required and so that it consumes the minimum of energy as soon as this device no longer has any role to play in respect of the exchange of data over this network.
