The method involves providing a lambda probe (13) with pumped reference downstream to a catalytic converter (12). The borrowed reference is operated pulse-wise by subjecting with reference current pulses. The polarization voltages of the lambda probe resulting from the reference current pulses are detected. A predetermined threshold value on a correct function of the catalytic converter is closed at a polarization voltage.
