The present disclosure relates to the use of a solid background layer (52) in conjunction with a transparent display panel (34). In one such implementation, a layer (50) that is switchable between opaque and transparent states is provided between the solid background layer (52) and the transparent display panel (34). By switching the switchable layer (50) between opaque and transparent states, visibility of the background layer (52) through the transparent display panel (34) may be controlled.
