An eco-friendly energy harvesting apparatus for powering an electronic device comprises a compact sensor such as a ferrite rod antenna to sense ambient radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic waves, means for converting the RF energy into a direct current (DC) which is used to power or charge the electronic device, and eco-friendly packaging. The complete system, which may be retro-fitted into existing battery holders, comprises a compact sensor and integrated converter for powering a range of electronic devices, such as clocks, torches, radio transmitters/receivers, active cats' eyes, doorbells etc; or for charging devices such as batteries or capacitors. The packaging may be bio-degradable and the complete apparatus has a topology akin to that of a traditional standard battery type.
