PURPOSE: A position and orientation estimating system and method using infrared ray are provided to simultaneously estimate the position and orientation of an object using the attenuation characteristics of light receiving and transmitting signals according to the orientation of an infrared signal. CONSTITUTION: A position and orientation estimating system using infrared ray comprises a light transmitting device(320) comprising a light emitting unit, a light receiving device(330) comprising a light receiving unit, a remote device(310) comprising the light transmitting device or the light receiving device, and an estimating device(340) which measures the intensity of irradiated light and estimates the position and orientation of the remote device using the intensity and the light receiving and transmitting characteristics varying according to the distance of the irradiated light.
