An auxiliary Kinetic Energy Recovery (KER) system for a machine with a rotating shaft which frequently stops and starts rotating, particularly a vehicle such as a car. A drive shaft from an engine is connected to a rotor A having coils 1, 2, 3. A flywheel including magnets M rotates independently of the shaft and is driven by gearwheel C, connected to the shaft and gear wheels E and F such that the flywheel may counter-rotate with respect to the rotor. Energy is transferred to and from storage capacitors via the flywheel. Magnetic or mechanical gearwheels may be used to drive the flywheel. A control circuit and a battery may also be provided. The device may be incorporated into the back wheels of a vehicle or could be incorporated into, or placed just after, a gearbox assembly. |
