A rotor for a rotating electrical machine is disclosed, the rotor comprising a rotor back plate 20, a plurality of permanent magnets 22 located on the rotor body, and a plurality of non-magnetized pole pieces 24 which allow field control of the machine. The pole pieces 24 are formed integrally with the rotor back plate 20. Each pole piece comprises a plurality of slits 26. This can allow pole pieces with sufficiently high permeability and low conductivity to be achieved, while simplifying the manufacturing process. The slits may be circumferential or radial (fig 5 not shown). The poles and back iron may be of cast iron and the slits may extend partially or completely to the back iron to obtain the appropriate eddy current reduction. The magnets may butt up to the pole pieces and an embodiment is described where the pole pieces are arranged radially inwardly and /or outwardly of the magnets.
