[Classes 42 (i) and 42 (ii)] [Also in Groups VII and XVI] A composite ribbed strip, for application as a sewing rib to a shoe insole, is formed by feeding two strips contemporaneously, folding one strip to form a two-ply layer, folding the other strip progressively over the two-ply layer to cover a portion thereof and form a four-ply layer, and bending portions of the plies of the two-ply layer and a portion of the other strip which extend beyond the four-ply layer at substantial angles to said four-ply layer to produce a composite ribbed strip having a four-ply rib portion with flange portions projecting laterally from the opposite sides of the base of said rib portion. As shown, a fabric strip A coated on both sides with pressureresponsive cement, and a strip B similarly coated on its upper side only, are fed to folding apparatus by means of web-feeding apparatus (see Group XVI) which supplies the strips under light tension only. Strip A passes through a series of hoops 234, 236, 238 arranged about a central tapering rib 242 of a folding device 223, Figs. 6 and 12, and is thereby folded upon itself to form a two-ply layer C, a shouldered recess 243 permitting the lower ply to extend slightly beyond the edge of the upper ply. The folded strip then passes through a guideway 246, Fig. 20, and is laid substantially centrally on strip B as the latter passes through a guideway 244. A roller 272 applies bonding pressure to the folded edge of strip A, and one edge of strip B is folded by a folding member 278 so as to overlie a portion of the two-ply layer C, the four-ply layer D thus formed being bonded by a pressure roller 260, Fig. 6. The composite strip now passes beneath stitching mechanism (see Group VII) where stitches S may, if desired, be inserted by a needle 220 through the four-ply layer D, while a plough 296, Fig. 24, passes under the edge of the upper ply of layer C and bends a portion E upwardly at right angles to the rest of the strip. The portions D and E of the strip are now turned bodily through 90 degrees, until the portion D extends vertically downwards, by the action of a suitably shaped plate 286 assisted by a presser arm 372, Fig. 28; the portions E and FG now constitute flanges on the rib-forming portion D of the composite strip H. Strip H now passes between intermittently-driven, knurled feed rollers 384, 386, Fig. 6, which also apply pressure to shape rib D and flanges E, FG. Roller 386 is grooved to receive rib D and roller 384 has an inclined surface which exerts a wiping action to bend or crease flange FG sharply at the base of rib D over a corresponding inclined surface on roller 386. The strip H may now be used for attachment to shoe insoles or, as shown, may pass between further rollers 480, 482, intermittently driven in synchronism with rollers 384, 386; rollers 480, 482 flatten the strip out and compress the tip of rib D, and forward the strip for winding on to a reel 538, Fig. 35. The reel is driven through a friction clutch 561 which permits reduction of speed of the reel as it fills up. The strip is traversed on the reel by an arm 536 oscillated by a face cam 582 driven from the reel shaft 540 by chain 596 and gearing 590, 588. Arm 536 is capable of lateral adjustment and lengthwise extension by means of slots 587 and 595 to vary its throw according to the size of reel. When the material H wound on the reel reaches a certain predetermined size, it raises a stop bar suspended thereabove, which engages the arm of a micro-switch and thus stops the machine.
