An apparatus and method for controlling a solid state disk comprises: a failure detector operable to detect a failure in the solid state disk; a status degrader, responsive to failure detector detecting a failure, operable to set a degraded status indicator for the solid state disk; and a degraded status controller, responsive to the degraded status indicator, to maintain the solid state disk in operation in a degraded operation mode.
