A method of performing a search and an apparatus adapted to assist a human searcher in the performance of this search and responsive to a user request are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a display device rendering a query window showing a search query of the user request; and at least two windows simultaneously showing search results for the search query from at least two search engines; and a ranked list of available search resources associated with a subject matter of the query; and a processor for submitting the search query of the user request to the at least two search engines, determining content of the query window, the at least two windows, and ranking the available search resources based on the subject matter of the query. A method of assisting a human searcher performing a search responsive to a user request and an apparatus assisting a human searcher performing this search are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a display device rendering a query window; a plurality of search engine selection controls for selecting search engines to activate with the query; a database device storing content associated with previous usage of search engines; and a processor ranking the search engines, determining an order of presentation of the search engine selection controls, rendering a selected media file, and receiving a search result created by the human searcher. The search engine selection controls represent the highest ranked search engines for the subject matter of the query. A method of human-assisted information mining including a human searcher responding to a search query and a system assisting a human searcher performing this search and responsive to a user request are disclosed. The system comprises a user device for submitting a request; a provider system for receiving the request, displaying a search result provided by a selected resource, requesting a media file identified by the search result and enabling a human provider to compile a response to the request based on a search performed by the human provider; a search system ranking search resources based on a keyword of the request, locating the selected resource to which a query associated with the request will be submitted, and recording information of the response formulated by the human provider; and a database for storing information related to the request and the response.
