The mechanism has an elastic return unit to return a selection regulator to a position corresponding to a neutral position of a gearbox. A gear shifter lever (1) is secured to the return unit, where the return unit comprises two tension springs (11, 12) with parallel axes. Each spring has two ends (11A, 12A) that are respectively connected to the regulator and a fixed structure e.g. control unit, of a motor vehicle. The springs intervene in opposite directions and have different stiffness laws to cover asymmetrical selection courses and limit feel of force transmitted to a user of the vehicle.
