Liquid and solid non-edible substances or objects (other than human and animal blood or derivatives thereof, drugs, pharmaceutical preparations, vaccines or sera, or cut plants), such as medical and surgical instruments; bottles, jars, cans, or containers; catgut, gauze, cotton, and bandages used in surgery; mummified zoological specimens; plant extracts, e.g. shellac and mimosa; bristles for shaving, hair, tooth, and household brushes; soda straws; down, feathers, kapok, cotton, wool, and horsehair filling for mattresses and pillows; silk and other textiles; cosmetics, e.g. cold cream, liquid rouge and skin lotions, are sterilized by irradiation with high-speed electrons having a velocity equivalent to more than one million volts during one or more very short periods lasting less than, say, 10-4 second. The material may be placed in an electron-permeable sealed container and may be cooled to below 0 DEG C. before irradiation. The sealed container may be evacuated or may contain an inert gas under superatmospheric pressure, and may be rotated during the irradiation to facilitate exposure of the entire surface. The source of radiation and the sealed container should be of the type described in Specification 673,924. Specifications 251,635 and 299,735, [both in Class 1 (i)], also are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 673,925 and the irradiation with corpuscular rays.
