PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a retardation layer which includes a plurality of regions differing in both in-plane phase difference and thickness-directional phase difference and has superior flatness and heat resistance, and a retardation substrate manufactured by the method.SOLUTION: A method manufactures a retardation plate composed of a solidified liquid crystal layer provided with two or more regions differing in birefrigence by forming a continuous liquid crystal material layer made of a photopolymerizable or photocrosslinkable thermotropic liquid crystal compound on a support, dividing the liquid crystal material layer into two or more regions, and irradiating the respective regions with polarized light and/or unpolarized light under different conditions respectively. The method includes a step of exposing the regions individually under conditions set for every region except the same condition with light with which the entire surface of the support is irradiated after irradiation of the entire surface with light having a smallest exposure amount among the conditions of irradiation light set for every the region. |
