The transmission i.e. eight-speed automatic transmission (10), has six torque transmitting mechanisms e.g. clutches (26, 28, 30), selectively engaged to interconnect sun gears (14A, 16A, 18A, 20A), planet gear carrier members (14B, 16B, 18B, 20B) and ring gears (14C, 16C, 18C, 20C) of stacked or nested planetary gear sets (14, 16, 18, 20) with each other. The torque transmitting mechanisms are selectively engaged in combinations of three to establish eight forward speed ratios and one reverse speed ratio between an input shaft/member (12) and an output shaft/member (22).
