The occupant protection device has a side airbag (2) which is unfolded by filling with a gas in an inner chamber of a vehicle (1) between a side window opening (1.2) of the vehicle and a vehicle occupant. The side airbag is formed such that it is extended in unfolded condition over a lower window frame (1.5) also along the vehicle parts in direction of a vehicle base. The vehicle parts are adjacent to the lower window frame.
