The object of the present invention is to provide a compound to be used in a reagent for detecting microorganisms, by which microorganisms can be quickly and surely detected without requiring a special instrument, the reagent for detecting microorganisms, and a method for detecting microorganisms. The object can be achieved by a tetrazolium compound represented by general formula (I) [wherein the symbols are as defined in the description], a coloring reagent for detecting microorganisms, said reagent comprising the tetrazolium compound, or a method for detecting microorganisms using the coloring reagent.
