PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide base paper for release paper useful especially for industrial process paper, which has an excellent filling property for polyethylene laminate paper and releasing agents and is reclaimable as a papermaking raw material and release paper suitable for process paper and release coated paper.SOLUTION: The base paper for release paper is obtained by providing at least one side of a base sheet with a coating layer containing a pigment and a binder. The pigment is a pigment of plate shape having a content of particles having a volume distribution average particle diameter of 0.5-3.0 μm and particle diameters of ≥2 μm of ≤15% and a pigment of other than plate shape having a content of particles having a volume distribution average particle diameter of 0.5-1.5 μm and particle diameters of ≥2 μm of ≤15%.
