A cavity forming device (100), also referred to as a cavity forming retaining clip, comprises a first face (110) and a second face (120). The first face (110) and the second face (120) are connected together by a body (130). The body (130) is elongate and extends along an imaginary longitudinal axis from the first face (110) to the second face (120). The body (130) separates the first face (110) from the second face (120) by a predetermined distance. The second face is arranged to receive a wall tie therethrough. In use a backing board for an outer skin is able to be clamped against the cavity forming device.
