Reprocessing hydrogen sulfide containing gas under the formation of sulfuric acid, comprises: (a) combusting the hydrogen sulfide containing gas with a combustion gas (102), to form of a sulfur dioxide- and water containing process gas; (b) drying the process gas; (c) catalytically oxidizing sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, in a first contact step; (d) absorbing sulfur trioxide; and (e) optionally carrying out further contact step for further catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide with optional subsequent absorption of sulfur trioxide. Reprocessing hydrogen sulfide containing gas under the formation of sulfuric acid, comprises: (a) combusting the hydrogen sulfide containing gas with a combustion gas (102), in a combustion apparatus to form of a sulfur dioxide- and water containing process gas; (b) drying the process gas; (c) catalytically oxidizing sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, in a first contact step, which is carried out in a tube contact apparatus; (d) absorbing sulfur trioxide; and (e) optionally carrying out further contact step for further catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, with optional subsequent absorption of sulfur trioxide. The sulfuric acid is conducted in the reverse flow to the process gas, which undergoes steps (a)-(d), and optionally steps (a)-(e), for absorbing sulfur trioxide in step (d) and optionally in step (e), and for drying the flue gas in step (a). An independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the above method, comprising a combustion apparatus for combusting the hydrogen sulfide containing starting material (101) with the oxygen containing combustion gas, at least one tube contact apparatus for catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, a device for conducting sulfuric acid in the reverse flow to the process gas, a device for absorbing sulfur trioxide in the sulfuric acid that is conducted in the reverse flow, a device for drying the process gas obtained from the combustion apparatus (104), using the sulfuric acid conducted in the reverse flow, and a device for conducting back unreacted oxygen and/or sulfur dioxide during the catalytic oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, into the combustion apparatus.
